Britney Spears Gets Visitation, but Not Custody

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A court commissioner ruled Wednesday that Britney Spears can have visits with her two sons but did not reverse an order giving temporary custody to Kevin Federline, the pop star's ex-husband, his attorney said.

Superior Court Commissioner Scott M. Gordon was expected to issue an order detailing the visitation rights, attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan said. The order was not released by the time court closed for the day.

Federline attended the hearing but Spears did not. Her attorney, Sorrell Trope, did not speak to reporters.

Court spokesman Allan Parachini indicated Spears would be allowed monitored visits every other day.

Federline, 29, and Spears, 25, were ordered back to court Oct. 26 for another hearing.

Flanked by bodyguards, Federline arrived in a blue suit and wearing a black patch over his right eye, covered by a pair of sunglasses.

He had a sore eye and needed the patch to prevent glare, Kaplan said.

The hearing began with Federline standing and being sworn in by a court clerk before the courtroom was cleared of media for the private hearing.

Kaplan said Spears' attorney argued strenuously for withdrawal of the order that gave temporary custody of the boys to Federline.

Spears and Federline had shared custody of 2-year-old Sean Preston and 1-year-old Jayden James.

But Monday's court order for Spears to temporarily surrender them to Federline came after she failed to produce a California driver's license and missed a court-ordered drug and alcohol test, Trope told People magazine.

A temporary driver's license was issued to Spears late Tuesday in Santa Monica, California Department of Motor Vehicles spokesman Mike Marando said Wednesday.

"She has completed her requirements for a driver's license," he said.

Among her recent problems, Spears was charged with misdemeanor counts of hit-and-run and driving without a valid license for in a crash with a parked car in August.

Spears and Federline were married in October 2004. She filed for divorce last November and it became official in July.

ordon previously ordered Spears to undergo random drug and alcohol testing twice a week after the court found she engages in "habitual, frequent and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol."

He also previously ordered Spears to meet weekly with a "parenting coach" who was to report back to the court about her skills.

Both Spears and Federline must complete the court's "Parenting Without Conflict" class.

Spears has spiraled seemingly out of control since splitting with Federline, who also has a son and daughter with former girlfriend Shar Jackson.

First she hit the Hollywood party circuit, where she was photographed several times sans underwear.

Then she volleyed in and out of rehab, shaved her head, beat a car with an umbrella and eventually spent a month at the posh Promises rehab clinic in Malibu.

An MTV Video Music Awards performance intended as a comeback was panned, with Spears appearing lethargic.

The following week, her management firm dropped her and her divorce lawyer resigned.

When to change your tires

You may have heard about doing the "penny test" to see when it's time to get new tires. Some experts want to toss that coin test in favor of the quarter.
The penny test is simple. Hold a penny so that you can see Abraham Lincoln's head. Now insert Lincoln's portrait, scalp-side down, into a groove in your tire tread. If your can still the top of his head, it's time for new tires.

That works because the distance between the edge of a penny and the top of Lincoln's head is about 2/32 of an inch (in normal speech, that would be 1/16 of inch, but tire treads are measured in 32nds of an inch).

But now some experts advise a more conservative approach. Instead of Lincoln's head on a penny, use George Washington's head on a quarter. That's about 4/32, or 1/8, of an inch. In track tests conducted by the tire Web site TireRack.com, using a quarter instead of a penny resulted in 24 percent shorter wet-road stopping distances.

If you can see Washington's wig, your tires are as close as you'll want to get to being bald.

Stock Buybacks effect on EPS

Stock that has been repurchased by the issuing company. These shares don't pay dividends, have no voting rights, and should not be included in shares outstanding calculations.

Treasury stock is created when a company does a share buyback and purchases its shares on the open market. This can be advantageous to shareholders because it lowers the number of shares outstanding. However, not all buybacks are a good thing. For example, if a company merely buys stock to improve financial ratios such as EPS or P/E, then the buyback is detrimental to the shareholders, and it is done without the shareholders' best interests in mind.

Fresh debate on crude oil price

PETALING JAYA: The spike up in crude oil prices to a high of US$80.36 per barrel last week has sparked fresh debate on the forward trend of crude oil prices.
Will the fossil energy price hit US$100 per barrel or retreat from the peak in the near future amid the patchy global economic picture?
Goldman Sachs Group Inc yesterday raised its year-end oil price forecast to US$85 per barrel from US$72 previously and it warned of a “high risk” of a jump above the US$90 level.
The financial group said the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) pledge to increase production in November was “too late, too little.”
Lord Ron Oxburgh, former chairman of Shell, had forecast that the price of oil could hit US$150 per barrel with oil production peaking within the next 20 years.
Presently chairman of biodiesel firm D1 Oil, he said the oil giants should invest in alternative energy as the supply of fossil energy was depleting. Opec, which accounts for 40% of the global oil supply, announced the cartel would bump up its production by 500,000 barrels per day starting in November.
Analysts doubt that the additional 500,000 barrels a day would be enough to reverse the surging crude oil prices, which have soared nearly 30% so far this year.
Yesterday, oil prices retreated from the US$80 level to US$78.59 per barrel at the press time.
High crude oil prices is indeed good news for Malaysia, a net oil exporter, given that the government revenue would rise in tandem with the spiralling fuel price.
The Federal Government expects its revenue to increase nearly 15% to RM141.8bil this year or 22.7% of the country's gross domestic products (GDP).
About 38% of the total government revenue comes from oil earnings.
Petroleum income tax is anticipated to hit RM22.6bil this year. Also, the RM24bil dividend income from Petronas contributes a large bulk of non-tax revenue.
Furthermore, the rising fuel prices also augur well for the country's plantation industry since palm oil is one of the feedstock for bio-diesel production.
The higher the fossil energy prices, the more economically viable to produce bio-diesel.
On the flip side, the Government will have to bear heavier burden to subsidise consumer fuel prices in the country.
Last week, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi assured the public that there would not be any hike in petrol prices this year.
The possibility of an increase in petrol pump price remains should crude oil price continues to climb.
Not just petrol, but for gas as well.
Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Lim Keng Yaik said yesterday the Cabinet committee would decide next Monday on the country's next gas policy and gas prices charged to Tenaga Nasional Bhd.
Lim noted that Petronas was forced to import the fuel because its gas fields in Terengganu could not meet the demand in the peninsula.
The national oil giant paid RM14bil in subsidy last year, for the imported gas it sold to the local consumers.
Crude oil prices had more than doubled since 2004 to fuel the global economic growth.
However, the recent spate of negative news, including the ripple effect from the credit crunch in the US resulting from rising defaults in subprime housing loans and the Japanese economy's failure to come out of its decade-long recession, has pointed to a deceleration trend in the world economy.
Fuel consumption would be lesser, consequently crude oil prices are expected to ease, instead of surging further.
Opec chief Abdalla Salem El-Badri said on Friday that the current oil price of US$80 did not reflect the fundamentals and was unlikely to last long.
“I don't think US$80 (per barrel) will last,” he told journalists at the Vienna headquarters of Opec. “The fundamentals do not support the price.”
Aberdeen Asset Management Sdn Bhd managing director Gerald Ambrose said he was not too concerned about high oil prices because Malaysia was the beneficiary of it.
“My worry is that the Malaysian government is heavily dependent on revenue generated by such high crude oil prices,” he noted.
Gerald anticipated that crude oil prices would drop as a result of a slowdown in the world economy.
“When that happens (crude oil prices falling below the US$70 level), it would be a challenging task for the Malaysian government to trim its budget deficit to 3.1% of GDP next year, from 3.2% this year,” Gerald commented.
The Government has forecast crude oil prices to be at about US$75 per barrel next year.

McLaren fined and stripped of constructors’ points

McLaren have been excluded from the 2007 constructors’ championship and fined US$100 million following Thursday’s FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) hearing in Paris. Drivers Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton have not been penalized and are free to continue their fight for the drivers' title.

The penalty follows McLaren’s admission that the team was in breach of the International Sporting Code through their possession of confidential technical data belonging to rivals Ferrari, who are now all but assured of the 2007 constructors’ title.

McLaren are also required to submit detailed plans of their 2008 car to the FIA, who warned that it could apply further sanctions relating to next season should any irregularities be found in the car’s design.

At July’s original hearing, the Council opted not to punish McLaren as it decided there was no proof that the Ferrari data had been used. Thursday’s second hearing followed the emergence of new evidence and the FIA’s request for McLaren’s drivers to submit any information they had that might be relevant to the case.

The FIA will explain the reasons behind the Council's decision on Friday, after which McLaren will decide whether or not to appeal.

The full statement from the FIA:

In an extraordinary meeting of the World Motor Sport Council was held in Paris on the 12th of September 2007, The following decision was taken:

"The WMSC has stripped Vodafone McLaren Mercedes of all constructors' points in the 2007 FIA Formula One World Championshiop an the team can score no point for the remainder of the season *.

"Furthermore, the team will pay a fine equal to 100 million dollar, less the FOM income lost as a result of the points deduction.

"However, due to the exceptional circumstances in which the FIA gave the team's drivers an immunity in return for providing evidence, there is no penalty in regards to drivers' points **.

"The WMSC will receive a full technical report on the 2008 McLaren car and will take a decision at its December 2007 meeting as to what sanction, if any, will be imposed on the team for the 2008 season."

The full reasons for this decision will be issued on the 14th September 2007.

* Points gained by other teams so far this season will not be affected.

** No McLaren representative will be allowed on the podium should a McLaren driver win any of the remaining races of the 2007 season
